[009:001] Freedom from (all) obligations (is declared) from All‚h and His Messenger [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam] to those of the MushrikŻn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of All‚h), with whom you made a treaty.

[009:002] So travel freely (O MushrikŻn Ė see V.2:105) for four months (as you will) throughout the land, but know that you cannot escape (from the punishment of) All‚h; and All‚h will disgrace the disbelievers.

[009:003] And a declaration from All‚h and His Messenger [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam] to mankind on the greatest day (the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah Ė the 12th month of Isl‚mic calendar) that All‚h is free from (all) obligations to the MushrikŻn (see V.2:105) and so is His Messenger [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam]. So if you (MushrikŻn) repent, it is better for you, but if you turn away, then know that you cannot escape (from the punishment of) All‚h. And give tidings (O Muhammad [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam]) of a painful torment to those who disbelieve.

[009:004] Except those of the MushrikŻn (see V.2:105) with whom you have a treaty, and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor have supported anyone against you. So fulfil their treaty to them for the end of their term. Surely, All‚h loves Al-MuttaqŻn (the pious. See V.2:2).

[009:005] Then when the Sacred Months (the 1st, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Isl‚mic calendar) have passed, then kill the MushrikŻn (see V.2:105) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in every ambush. But if they repent [by rejecting Shirk (polytheism) and accept Islamic Monotheism] and perform As-Sal‚t (the prayers), and give Zak‚t (obligatory charity), then leave their way free. Verily, All‚h is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

[009:006] And if anyone of the MushrikŻn (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of All‚h) seeks your protection then grant him protection so that he may hear the Word of All‚h (the Qur'‚n) and then escort him to where he can be secure, that is because they are men who know not.

(V.9:5)

A) See the footnote of (V.2:193).

B) Narrated AbŻ Hurairah [radhi-yAll‚hu 'anhu]: When the Prophet [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam] died and AbŻ Bakr became his successor and some of the Arabs reverted to disbelief, 'Umar said, "O AbŻ Bakr! How can you fight these people although All‚h's Messenger [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam] said, 'I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: La il‚ha illall‚h (none has the right to be worshipped but All‚h), and whoever said L‚ il‚ha illall‚h, All‚h will save his property and his life from me, unless (he does something for which he receives legal punishment) justly, and his account will be with All‚h?' " AbŻ Bakr said, "By All‚h! I will fight whoever differentiates between Sal‚t (prayers) and Zak‚t (charity); as Zak‚t is the right to be taken from property (according to All‚h's Orders). By All‚h! If they refused to pay me even a kid they used to pay to Allah's Messenger , I would fight with them for withholding it." 'Umar said, "By All‚h! It was nothing, but I noticed that All‚h opened AbŻ Bakr's chest towards the decision to fight, therefore, I realized that his decision was right." [Sahih Al-Bukh‚ri, 9/6924-5 (O.P.59)]
