[009:014] Fight against them so that All‚h will punish them by your hands and disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people,

[009:015] And remove the anger of their (believers') hearts. All‚h accepts the repentance of whom He wills. All‚h is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

[009:016] Do you think that you shall be left alone while All‚h has not yet tested those among you who have striven hard and fought and have not taken WalÓjah [(Bit‚nah Ė helpers, advisors and consultants from disbelievers, pagans) giving openly to them their secrets] besides All‚h and His Messenger [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam], and the believers. All‚h is Well-Acquainted with what you do.

[009:017] It is not for the MushrikŻn (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of All‚h) to maintain the mosques of All‚h (i.e. to pray and worship All‚h therein, to look after their cleanliness and their building), while they witness against their own selves of disbelief. The works of such are in vain and in Fire shall they abide.

[009:018] The mosques of All‚h shall be maintained only by those who believe in All‚h and the Last Day; perform As-Sal‚t (the prayers), and give Zak‚t (obligatory charity) and fear none but All‚h. It is they who are on true guidance.

[009:019] Do you consider the providing of drinking water for the pilgrims and the maintenance of Al-Masjid Al-Har‚m (at Makkah) as equal to the one who believes in All‚h and the Last Day, and strives hard and fights in the Cause of All‚h? They are not equal before All‚h. And All‚h guides not those people who are the Z‚limŻn (polytheists and wrong doers).

[009:020] Those who believed (in the Oneness of All‚h Ė Isl‚mic Monotheism) and emigrated and strove hard and fought in All‚h's Cause with their wealth and their lives, are far higher in degree with All‚h. They are the successful.

(V.9:20): A) Narrated Abu Hurairah [radhi-yAll‚hu 'anhu]: The Prophet [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam] said, "Whoever believes in All‚h and His Messenger, performs Sal‚t (prayers) and observes Saum (fasts) during the month of Ramadan, then it will be a promise binding upon All‚h to admit him to Paradise, no matter whether he fights in All‚h's Cause or remains in the land where he is born."* The people said, "O All‚h's Messenger! Shall we acquaint the people with this good news?" He said, "Paradise has one hundred grades which All‚h has reserved for the MujahidŻn who fight in His Cause, and the distance between each of two grades is like the distance between the heaven and the earth. So, when, you ask All‚h (for something), ask for Al-Firdaus which is the middle and highest part of Paradise." [The subnarrator added, "I think the Prophet [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam] also said, 'Above it (i.e. Al-Firdaus) is the Throne of the Most Gracious (i.e. All‚h), and from it gush forth the rivers of Paradise]." [Sahih Al-Bukh‚ri, 4/2790 (O.P.48)]

B) The wish for martyrdom. Narrated Abu Hurairah [radhi-yAll‚hu 'anhu]: The Prophet [sal-All‚hu 'alayhi wa sallam] said, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! Were it not for some men amongst the believers who dislike to be left behind me, and whom I cannot provide with means of conveyance, I would certainly never remain behind any Sariyya (army unit) going out for Jih‚d in All‚h's Cause. By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! I would love to be martyred in All‚h's Cause and then come back to life, and then get martyred and then come back to life again, and then get martyred and then come back to life again, and then get martyred." [Sahih Al-Bukh‚ri, 4/2797 (O.P.54)]

* In another Hadith it is mentioned: In order to enter Paradise, one must believe in Six Articles of Faith: that is to believe in All‚h, in His Messengers, His revealed Books, His Angels, the Day of Resurrection, Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments). [See the footnote of (V.3:85)]. And also he must act on the five Principles of Islam [See the footnote of (V.2:4)].
