In the Name of All?h, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
On the authority of Ab? Dard?? (ra?i All?hu ?anhu), the Messenger of All?h (?allall?hu ?alayhi wa-sallam) said:“Will any of you fail to recite one-third of the Qur??n nightly?” It was then said: “How can [we] recite one-third of the Qur??n? The Messenger of All?h (?allall?hu ?alayhi wa-sallam) replied: “Say: He is All?h, (the) One.” [i.e. S?rah al-Ikhl??] is equivalent to one-third of the Qur??n [?a??? Muslim: 811].
Shaykh ?Abd al-Raz?q al-Badr mentions: All?h is the greatest! What a tremendous virtue! Verily, there are 361,180 letters in the Qur??n. It is said, there are 323,015 letters, and it is also said there are 340,740 letters in the Qur??n, as mentioned by ibn Kath?r in the introduction of his tafs?r. If it were whosoever recites a letter from the letters of the Qur??n is rewarded with ten rewards as mentioned in the narration of ibn Mas??d, then how many rewards would one attain if one recited the whole Qur??n? [Keeping in mind] that reciting S?rah al-Ikhl??—being one line—three times is equivalent to that (of the whole Qur??n). All?h has made its reward great! This virtue does not mean that reciting (S?rah al-Ikhl??) three times will suffice you from reading the rest of the Qur??n; rather, the salaf despised repeating its recitation more than once when reading (for khatm al-Qur??n).
