Dr Saleh As-Saleh (rahimahullaah) was from the foremost students of Shaykh Ibnul-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah). He took knowledge from the Shaykh from a long distance for a while, then on a continuous basis from 1412-1415H and then regularly from 1415H where he became a dedicated student and studied with him until his death in 1421H. Dr Saleh lived around 500 yards from Shaykh’s Ibnul-Uthaymeen’s house and has been blessed by Allaah to have obtained a PHd in Medical Biochemistry and was a professor at Qaasim University, KSA. Furthermore, he was a well-known author of many great writings and books. He resided in 'Unayzah, KSA and was active in his call to the salafi da’wah. He used to hold regular classes in the English Language on Paltalk.

The books being explained are The fundamentals of Faith and the 3 Fundamental

The Shaykh mentioned that Knowledge is the most noble thing that one can ask for, and the best it is for a seeker to strive for. And when the ulema speak of knowledge, they mean the Islamic knowledge. It is the knowledge of "Allaah said.." and the "Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said..." and all that assists in understanding this. This is the true and beneficial knowledge.

The Merits and virtues of knowledge varias with one's adherence to it. The greatest and most excellent knowledge is that which pertains to Allaah and His Names and Attributes.. this is the Aqeedah (the Creed). Following this is that which is related to Allaah's rights over the creation (what Allaah has prescribed upon us. Allaah honoured the people who possess the know, and raised their status high.

[003:018] Allh bears witness that L ilha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He always) maintains His creation in justice. L ilha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

In the first lecture, the Shaykh mentions the importance of Ilm (knowledge), and quotes the following Ayaah from the Quran:
  • [003:018] Allh bears witness that L ilha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He always) maintains His creation in justice. L ilha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
  • [039:009] Is one who is obedient to Allh, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say: "Are those who know equal to those who know not?" It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allh's Signs and Verses).
  • [013:019] Shall he then who knows that what has been revealed to you (O Muhammad [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) from your Lord is the truth, be like him who is blind? But it is only the men of understanding that pay heed.
  • [058:011] O you who believe! When you are told to make room in the assemblies, (spread out and) make room. Allh will give you (ample) room (from His Mercy). And when you are told to rise up [for prayers, or Jihd (holy fighting in Allh's Cause), or for any other good deed], rise up. Allh will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge. And Allh is Well-Acquainted with what you do.
  • [035:028] And likewise, men and Ad-Dawbb [moving (living) creatures, beasts] and cattle are of various colours. It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allh. Verily, Allh is All-Mighty, Oft-Forgiving.

Some of what was mentioned inshaAllah, includes:
  • The Shaykh starts with 'know', which is an ettiquette of drawing attention so that the listener will be attentive of the knowledge following.
    • This was done by the Prophet :saws:, such as:
      • "Shouldn't I tell you about the gravest of sins?"
      • "Do you know what your Lord has said..?"
      • "Do you know what is backbiting?"
  • "May Allah's Mercy be upon you", similar to "Raheemakallah wa ghafaralak".
    • When Rahmah (Mercy) and Maghfirah (Forgiveness) are mentioned together, Maghfirah means forgiveness of previous sins and Rahmah refers granting what is good and protection of future sins (success and safety from sins).
  • "Obligatory" -> that is obligatory on the individual
  • "Al-ilm", ie, acquiring Ilm (knowledge).
    • What is intended is Al-ilm ash-sharaaee (the legal Islamic knowledge).
    • Imaam Ahmad said: He should seek and acquire the knowledge that he needs to establish his deen with. Like what? What he cannot be ignorant of, Salaah, Fasting, etc (Aqeedah, Worship, Transactions, etc).
    • The true Siffa of the Believer: to yield and submit to the truth in the deen.
  • The Hadith of Anas: Seeking knowledge is Fard on every Muslim.
  • The Ranks/Levels of Knowledge:
    1. Comprehending the true reality of a thing, with certainity
    2. The slight ignorance: the lack of full comprehension
    3. The compounded/aggrevated ignorance: comprehending something in a way that is contrary to its reality
    4. Delusion: to think that one comprehends someting despite the presence of something that should make you realize that it is incorrect.
    5. Doubt: you may think you comprehend something, but you know of something that is contrary to it
    6. Preponderance: comprehension of something despite of something contrary to it.
  • Knowledge is of 2 categories:
    • Inevitable: no need for proof; for example, the fire is hot.
    • Speculative: requires investigation and proof; for example, it is obligatory to have niyyah when making wudhu.. this is speculative and requires proof.
  • What is this knowledge that is obligatory on us to know?
    • Knowing Allah, Knowing the Messenger of Allah :saws:, and knowing the deen with evidences. This is important
  • Knowledge of Allah
    • The foundation of the deen; A person cannot be on the true Islaam except by knowing Allah; Knowledge in the heart and accepting the Commands of Allah, and the Shareeah of the MEssenger of Allah :saws:
    • By contemplating the legislative signs in the Quraan and the Sunnah.
    • By contemplating Al Ayaatul Kawneeyah: The Universal Signs
    • [051:020] And on the earth are signs for those who have Faith with certainty. [051:021] And also in your own selves. Will you not then see?
  • Knowledge of the Messenger of Allah :saws:
    • An obligation on every legally responsible person, because he :saws: is the one conveying from Allah, and this requires accepting what he :saws: brought.
    • Believing in that which he conveyed, and complying to his commands, and staying away from the prohibitions, and accepting and applying his Shareeah:
      • [004:065] But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.

      • [024:051] The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allh (His Words, the Qur'n) and His Messenger [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam], to judge between them, is that they say: "We hear and we obey." And such are the successful (who will live forever in Paradise).

      • [024:063] Make not the calling of the Messenger (Muhammad [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) among you as your calling one of another. Allh knows those of you who slip away under shelter (of some excuse without taking the permission to leave, from the Messenger [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam]). And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad's) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.

        • Imaam Ahmad mentioned concerning this verse: Do you know what the fitnah (trial) is in this verse?.. it is the fitnah of shirk. Since if he rejects any saying of the Messenger of Allah :saws:, some sort of heresay might enter his heart.

  • Knowledge of Islaam with evidences.
    • Islaam has a broad/general meaning (Manaam), and a specific/particular meaning.
    • Islaam in the general meaning means worshiping Allah in that which He legislated, from the time he sent the Messengers, until the Hour will be established. All the previous revelations were Islaam, generally:

      • [002.128] "Our Lord! And make us submissive to You and of our offspring a nation submissive to You, and show us our Mansik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage Hajj and 'Umrah), and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.
      • Shaykyl Islaam ibn Taymiyyah mentions: Islaam in the general sense means Worshipping Allah alone, and this is the deen of the Prophets.
      • [005:044] Verily, We did send down the Taurt (Torah) [to Ms (Moses)], therein was guidance and light, by which the Prophets, who submitted themselves to Allh's Will, judged for the Jews. And the rabbis and the priests [also judged for the Jews by the Taurt (Torah) after those Prophets], for to them was entrusted the protection of Allh's Book, and they were witnesses thereto. Therefore fear not men but fear Me (O Jews) and sell not My Verses for a miserable price. And whosoever does not judge by what Allh has revealed, such are the Kfirn (i.e. disbelievers of a lesser degree as they do not act on Allh's Laws).
      • [010:084] And Ms (Moses) said: "O my people! If you have believed in Allh, then put your trust in Him if you are Muslims (those who submit to Allh's Will)."
      • [002.133] Or were you witnesses when death approached Ya'qb (Jacob) ['alayhis-salm] When he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We shall worship your Ilh (God Allh) the Ilh (God) of your fathers, Ibrhm (Abraham), Ism'l (Ishmael), Ishq (Isaac), One Ilh (God), and to Him we submit (in Islm)."
    • Islaam in the specific sense, means the deen that was sent with the Prophet :saws::
      • [003:085] And whoever seeks a religion other than Islm, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.
      • [005:003] ...This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islm as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin (such can eat these above mentioned meats), then surely, Allh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
  • With Evidences:
    • 'That which leads to that which is sought'..
    • "Sameeyah" (textual evidence): refers to all that which is affirmed by way of Revalation (Quran and the Sunnah). Is like the saying of Allah about His Prophet :saws::
      • [048:029] Muhammad [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam] is the Messenger of Allh.
      • [003:114] They believe in Allh and the Last Day; they enjoin Al-Ma'rf (Islmic Monotheism, and following Prophet Muhammad [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and opposing Prophet Muhammad [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam]); and they hasten in (all) good works; and they are among the righteous.
    • "Ackleeyah" (intellectual proofs): that which is established through observations and consideration. This is done frequently in the Quran. "From his signs are such and such.." Such as, the prophetic knowledge that was given to the Messenger of Allah, his miracles, etc. These are all intellectual proofs of the Messengership of Muhammad :saws:.
