Default Does The Pregnant or Breast Feeding Woman Need to Make Up Her Fasts? The Fatwa of Ibn

As Salaam 'Alaykum wa RahmatUllaahi wa Barakatahu,

The brother Abu 'AbdurRahmaan 'Ali al-Filistinee was asked concerning the permissibility of the pregnant or breastfeeding woman to break her fast in Ramadhaan, and if so, whether she needs to make up those fasts and/or pay the fidyah. The answer was a very comprehensive one from the correct position held by the scholars of hadeeth, from them Ash-Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hadee al-Wad'ee (Rahimahullaahu Ta'alaa). The brother elaborates on the principle of Ahl Hadeeth, that once a companion has a statement on a particular issue and none of the other companions differed with him, we hold this to be the correct position, regardless of who from the later generations differed with him. In this particular issue, both 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Abbaas and 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Umar (May Allaah be pleased with them and their fathers) both told their pregnant wives to break their fast and to pay the fidyah for each day that they missed without making it up.
