5 Reminders for Trini Muslims:
Neglected and Abandoned Actions in the Salaah

Some advices to my fellow Muslim brothers in Trinidad and Tobago. Please share, to help revive these sunnahs. BarakAllahu feekum. The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, what means, "Whoever invites to goodness will have a reward like all those who follow him in that, without their rewards decreasing in the least..." (Muslim)

(1a) Raising the hands before and after Ruku (“raful-yadain”)

Evidences from Hadith:
  1. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith #735) Narrated Salim bin Abdullah: My father said, “Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the Salaah; and on saying the Takbir for bowing (ruku); And on raising up his head from bowing he used to do the same and then say ‘Sami Allahu liman hamida, Rabbana wa lakal hamd.’ And he did not do that (ie, raising the hands) in prostrations.”

  2. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 401*) Wa’il bin Hujr (radhiallah anhu) narrated that he saw the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) raising his hands at the time of beginning the Salat and reciting Takbir (and according to Hammaam the narrator: the hands were lifted opposite the ears). He wrapped his hands in his cloth and placed his right hand over his left hand. And when he was about to bow down, he brought out his hands from the cloth, and then raised them, and then recited Takbir and bowed down; and when he said: ‘Sami Allahumliman hamida’, he raised his hands, and when he prostrated himself he prostrated between his two palms.

  3. (Abu Dawood, As-Salaat, Chapter: About raising the hands when one stands after 2 rakaahs, Hadith #744): Ali (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to raise his hands in the beginning of Salaah, before bowing for Ruku’, and after raising his head from Ruku’, and when he stood up after performing two Rak’ahs.

(1b) Analysis of the 3 hadith incorrectly used for not raising the hands

[Excerpts from Prayer According to the Sunnah, by Zulfiqar (Published by Darrussalam)]
  1. (Muslim, As-Salat, Hadith 430): Jabir bin Samurah (radhiAllahu anhu) has stated that the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “How is it that I see you raising your hands as if these are tails of headstrong horses? Be tranquil in Salaah.”

    This Hadith does not mention when in the Salaah the Companions (radhiAllahu anhum) were raising their hands and were thereby forbidden. Further, in Sahih Muslim, there are two ahadith from Jabir (radhiAllahu anhu) that makes this point perfectly clear:

    (Muslim, as-Salaat, Hadith 431 [311 in summerized Sahih Muslim]) Jabir bin Samurah (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: “When we performed Salaah with the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam), we said: (in Taslim): ‘As-Salamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah’ and motioned withour hands on both sides (ie, raised the hands after each Taslim like one raises his hand when he is greeting another). Upon this, the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Why do you motion with your hands as if they are the tails of headstrong horses? It is enough for you to place your hand on your thigh and then make Taslim (turning the head while saying Salam when concluding the Salah) to your brother on the right side and then on the left.”

    Imaam an-Nawawi has stated in his book (al-Majmu): “To infer from this Hadith of Jabir bin Samurah (radhiAllahu anhu) that raising the hands in Salaah is not necessary while bending for Ruku and after rising from Ruku is a strange argument and a sign of vile ignorance of the Sunnah, because this hadith does not pertain to raising the hands in Salah while going to Ruku and raising from it. It is related to the prohibition of making signs with both the hands at the time of Taslim in Tashahud. The People of Hadith (Muhadithin) and those like them have no difference of opinion on this issue.”

  2. (Abu Dawood, as-Salaah, Hadith 748): Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radhiAllahu anhu) said: “Should I not tell you about the Prophet’s salaah? He performed salaah and did not raise his hands, except for the first time.”

    After this hadith, Imaam Abu Dawood has stated: “This hadith is not correct in this wording.” Imaam Tirmidhi has quoted the saying of Abdullah bin Mubarak in connection to this that: “Abdullah bin Mas’ud’s hadith about abandoning the raising of the hands in Salaah is not proven correct” Imaam ibn Hibban has said that this narration has many defects which make it invalid.

  3. (Abu Dawood, as-Salaah, Hadith 749):Bara bin Azib (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: “The Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to raise his hands up to the ears at the beginning of the salah. He did not raise them again.”

    Imaam an-Nawawi says Sufian bin Oyaina graded this hadith Daeef (unauthentic). Imam Shafi, Imam Humaidi (Imam Bukhari’s teacher), Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal also regard it as Daeef because Yazeed bin Abi Ziyad did not say “He did not raise them again” at first... he added these words on the instruction of the people of Kufa.

(2) Placing the hands on the floor before the knees (for Sujuud)

(Abu Dawood, as-Salaat, Chapter: How one should place one’s knees before the hands, Hadith 840): Abu Hurairah (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “When one of you performs sajdah, he should not kneel like a camel, but should place his hands before his knees.”

Also, Imaam Bukhari mentions in his Sahih, in the Chapter (128) “One should say takbir while going in prostration”: Nafi said: “Ibn Umar used to place both his hands (on the ground) before his knees.”

(3) Keeping the Arms widely separated (in Sujuud)

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Adhan, Chapter: During the prostrations one should keep one’s arms away from one’s sides, Hadith 807): Abdullah bin Malik bin Huhaina (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: “Whenever the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) performed Salah, (in prostration) he used to keep his arms widely separated (from his body) so much so that the whiteness of his armpits was visible.”

(Sahih Muslim, as-Salaat, Chapter: Comprehensive description of the Salaah, Hadith 496): Maimunah (rahdhiAllahu anha), the wife of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wa sallam narrated: “When the Messenger of Allaah salAllahu alayhi wa sallam prostrated himself, if a lamb wated to pass between his arms, it could pass.”

(4) Pointing the toes to the Qiblah (in Sujuud)

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 828): Abu Humaid as-Sai’di (rathiAllahu anhu) said, I remember the Salaah of Allah’s Messenger salallahu alayhi wa sallam better than any of you: “... In prostration, he placed both his hands on the ground with the forearms away from his body, and his toes were facing the Qiblah. …”

(5) The sitting of rest (after Sujuud), and supporting when getting up

(Bukhari, Adhan, Chapter: How to support oneself on the ground while standing up after finishing the Rakah, Hadith 824): Ayyub narrated: Abu Qilabah said, Malik bin Huwairith (radhiAllahu anhu) came to us and led us in Salah in this masjid of ours and said: I lead you in Salah just to show you how Allaah’s Messenger salallahu alayhi wa sallam performed his Salaah.”. I asked Abu Qilabah, “How was the salah of Malik bin Huwairith?” He replied, “Like the salaah of this Shaykh of ours (ie, Amr bin Salamah).” That Shaykh used to pronounce the Takbir perfectly and when he raised his head from the second prostration he would sit for a while, and then support himself on the ground and get up.”

Note: This sitting is known as jalsah al-istiraahah (the sitting of rest) by the scholars of fiqh. ash-Shaafi'ee supported it, as did Ahmad in Tahqeeq (111/1). Ibn Haanee said in his Masaa`il of Imaam Ahmad (p. 42), "I saw Abu `Abdullaah (i.e. Imaam Ahmad) sometimes leaning on his hands when standing up for the next rak`ah, and sometimes sitting straight and then getting up." It was also the preference of Imaam Ishaaq bin Raahawayh, who said in Marwazee's Masaa`il (1/147/2), "The example was set by the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) of supporting himself with his hands when getting up, whether he was old or young."
