Script Question & Answer Session with Shaykh Abdur Rahman al-Ajlaan

By Shaykh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan Al-‘Ajlaan ???? ????
on Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Opening Remarks

The Shaykh ???? ???? began by praising Allaah and sending salaah and salaam on the Prophet ??? ???? ???? ????, his family and his Companions. He then proceeded by extending salaams: Assalaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh, from Makkah al-Mukarramah to the muslims in all corners of the world. I hope that Allaah ????? blesses us with beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds. I thank Allaah ????? that He made all of us from the best people ever raised up for mankind – the Ummah of Muhammad ??? ???? ???? ????. He made us from the best of Ummam (nations) because we promote the good and forbid the evil and we believe in Allaah ????? ??????. This is a tremendous blessing from Allaah ????? to us and He is to be thanked for it. We thank Him and we praise Him and we ask Him for thabaat (???? – firmness) upon eemaan – to make us firm in our belief in Him until the day that we meet Him. We ask Allaah ????? to increase us in eemaan, and by thanking Allaah ????? we will be increased in eemaan as Allaah ????? said:

????????? ??????? ????????? ?????????? ?????

{And Allaah increases in guidance those who walk aright…} [Maryam 19:76]

Questions & Answers

1. Question: Are spirit and wine vinegar permissible?

Answer: It is not permitted to eat or drink vinegar that has a portion of alcohol in it because this portion makes it najis (impure) so it is not permissible. Therefore it is haraam to eat or drink anything which has a portion of alcohol in it.

2. Question: Is it permissible to sit and eat on a dining table?

Answer: It is permissible to eat at a dining table because the principle regarding how you sit and eat, is that it is permissible except if a certain text from the Qur'aan or the Sunnah prohibits such a way of sitting and eating.

3. Question: Is it permissible to make any du’aa (supplication) that we have memorized from the Book of Allaah or the Sunnah of His Messenger ??? ???? ???? ???? in the Qunoot, or should it be restricted to only specific du’aa?

Answer: It is permissible for a believer to make du’aa as long as the du’aa has been authentically reported, and as long as there is no sin in and it is not a du’aa that one cuts off his relatives with. As far as the du’aa that is said in the Qunoot, the Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ???? taught al-Hafidh ibn Ali ibn Abi Taalib and it is on the authority of al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Taalib that he said: “The Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ???? taught me some words to say..”[1] Then the Shaykh ???? ???? went on to read out the du’aa of Qunoot, which should be known and which can be read Inshaa Allaahu ?????. After the du’aa of Qunoot the servant of Allaah ????? can choose whatever du’aa he likes as long as it consists of good in the life of this world as well as the next.

4. Question: A very good, committed and Inshaa Allaah sincere brother calls people to Salafiyyah but sometimes aggressively questions Muslims regarding if they are Salafi or not. This has resulted in many Muslims feeling offended and turning away from the word ‘Salafi’. This brother believes that the word Salafi must be used right away in Da’wah otherwise it is a sign that the person is ashamed of being Salafi. How should this person be advised?

Answer: It is not incumbent for one calling to the religion of Allaah ????? to use a specific phrase such as ‘Salafiyyah’. Rather a caller to Allaah ????? should call to the Book of Allaah ????? and the Sunnah of His Messenger ??? ???? ???? ????, or to the haqq (truth), or to the Qur'aan. So it is not incumbent for a caller to Allaah ????? to use a specific phrase such as ‘Salafiyyah’. Why? Because using the phrase ‘Salafiyyah’ could be used in issues far from the truth and in turn the phrase may be hated and people may be chased away from it. So it is not incumbent to use that specific phrase in calling to Allaah ?????.

5. Question: A brother asked about Islaamic Banking, Financial Institutions and the Western banks which offer Islaamic Solutions for loans. Can you please tell us if the practices by these so-called banks are halaal and interest-free and can Muslims in the West engage in them to purchase homes, cars etc. by way of mortgage, insurance and financing?

Answer: It is permissible to deal with a bank and other institutions whether they are Islaamic or not as long as our dealings with them are correct legislated dealings, dealings where we avoid ribaa, cheating/fraud, lying and deception as well as all kinds of other unlegislated or prohibited dealings. As long as our dealings with them are correct, then it is permissible. “The Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ???? bought some food from a Jew and left his dirah (breastplate/armor) as collateral with a Jew.”[2] At the same time the Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ???? could have bought what he needed from a Muslim and left the collateral with a Muslim, but he ??? ???? ???? ???? was legislating for the Ummah the permissibility of dealing with non-Muslims, as long as the dealings are correct and void of anything impermissible. The fact that they deal with ribaa and conduct other unlegislated or impermissible dealings with others, should not stop us from dealing with them as long as we deal with them in a legislated manner which is permissible and by avoiding everything prohibited.

6. Question: Is it permissible to wear clothing that has a name ‘Royal’ on it. We know that Allaah ?????? ?????? is the majesty. So should we stay away from things that claim to be ‘royal’?

Answer: It is permissible for us to wear such clothing with the condition that it does not show or advertise something that is impermissible. This is what is not permissible, other than that it is permissible for us to wear such clothing.

7. Question: I wanted to know what time do we pray salaatu-duhaa? I was told to pray 10:00am in the morning but now it is winter and salaatu-dhuhur comes in at 11:00am. So what time should I pray salaatu-duhaa?

Answer: The time for salaatu-Duhaa is wide ranging. It starts from the time that the sun rises until the time of salaatu-Dhuhur. After the sun rises by about quarter of an hour until the time for salaatu-Dhuhur, this is all the time of salaatu-Duhaa. So if she prays at the beginning of that time which is a quarter of an hour after Fajr or during the middle of that time or right before salaatu-Dhuhur then there is no problem in doing so. But the best thing for a servant of Allaah to do is to pray salaatul-Fajr and then stay in the masjid until the sun rises and wait for quarter of an hour and then pray salaatu-Duhaa. This is the best thing to do. If one does not sit in the masjid, then the best time to pray is when the heat is intensive. Due to the saying of the Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ????: “the salaat of the Awwaabeen (those who keep turning back to Allaah ?????) is when the heat is intensified.[3]

8. Question: A sister has recently started practicing Islaam, however she faces much trials with her family at home. She stopped her Psychology degree due to free mixing and sometimes being alone with her male tutor. It has made her parents unhappy. Is it permissible to resume her degree to please her parents? Also, how do you advise that she deals with her family?

Answer: It is upon all Muslims whether male or female, to be keen on being kind and beneficent to their parents. This is what Allaah ????? ?????? ordered with in surah al-‘Ankaboot:

???????????? ??????????? ????????????? ???????

{And We have enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents…} [al-‘Ankaboot 29:8]

And in surah Luqmaan, Allaah ????? says:

???????????? ??????????? ????????????? ?????????? ??????? ??????? ????? ??????

{And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship…} [Luqmaan 31:14]

However, if the parent orders a Muslim to disobey Allaah or with a form of disobedience to Allaah, then there is no obedience to the parent in this case due to the saying of the Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ????: "There is no obedience to the creation in disobedience to the Creator."[4]

9. Question: Is it permissible to donate to Muslim fundraisers from the roots of interest?

Answer: It is waajib (compulsory) for the Muslim to abandon dealings with ribaa. If it occurs that a Muslim has money in which there is some ribaa, then it is upon him to donate that money to benefit the Muslims. He should not donate it with the intention of sadaqah (charity) because Allaah is Tayyib (Good) and He does not accept anything except that which is good.[5] So Allaah ????? will not accept sadaqah from wealth which is haraam. He will not accept sadaqah from money that has some ribaa in it. So a Muslim must get rid of that money with other than the intention of sadaqah by donating it in order to benefit the Muslims. Allaah ????? will reward him for his intention Inshaa Allaah.

10. Question: A sister asks about making Hijrah alone.

Answer: If her presence in that land is a fitnah (trial) for her and she is afraid for her Deen i.e. she is afraid from turning away from her Deen. Then if she is able to travel with some virtuous women who have their mahaarim with them then I pray that there is no problem in doing so. Allaah ????? will make it easy for her according to her intention.

11. Question: Is Car/Life/Health Insurances permissible in Islaam ?

Answer: Health insurance, life insurance and car insurance are not permitted due to what they have of jahaalah (uncertainty) and risk. For instance a man can pay a lot, he can pay for a long duration and not benefit anything from what he has paid. On the other hand, a man can pay only once or twice and take a lot of money in return. Due to this, it is not permissible to engage in life, car or health insurance.

12. Question: A sister is currently homeless since she returned to practicing true Islaam and asks if it permissible for her to work as a Medical Transcriptionist who would be preparing documents which would be forwarded to Health/Life/Car Insurance companies to make it convenient for the patient or client to obtain their claim.

Answer: It is upon the Muslim and the Muslimah to find a halaal source of provision i.e. a halaal job. They should be assured and certain that their provision will not decrease in anything due to the saying of the Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ????, “A soul will not die until it takes all its provisions.”[6] So some people may hurry and take their provision by means of haraam and others may be patient and wait until they obtain it from the halaal. Allaah ????? will provide them with halaal provision. Allaah says:

?????????????? ????? ??????? ???????????? ????? ???????????? ????? ???????? ??????????????

{…Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression…}
[al-Maa’idah 5:2]

So it is upon a person to look at his job – does it lead to, or help with something that is haraam; does it allow him to be alone with a non-mahram woman? If so, then he should try to avoid and abandon that type of job. If it is the opposite i.e. his job does not lead to anything haraam nor does it lead him to being alone with a non-mahram woman; then he may continue with that job. This is even if he works with someone who is involved with something that is haraam. This is because as comes in the Sunnah, the Sahaabah used to work with the Jews on farms and they used to take some dates as a salary for their work. Likewise it is reported that ’Ali ??? ???? ??? worked on a farm for a Jew and he took as a wage some dates and he gave those dates to the Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ???? to eat from, and the Messenger ate from them. [7]

13. Question: If a person has a sexually transmitted disease that cannot be cured, and she is married can her husband take another wife?

Answer: It is upon the Muslim to marry the women that he is pleased with. Allaah ????? ?????? said:

??????????? ??? ????? ????? ????? ?????????? ??????? ????????? ?????????

{…then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four…} [an-Nisaa’ 4:3]

So there is no harm for him in doing so, even if his first wife has a disease or is sick. It is not incumbent upon him to let his second wife know the state of his first wife. If it is feared that the second wife may contract the disease from the first wife, then the solution will be to keep the second wife away from the first wife. This is the solution to this situation. However, as a reason for him to be prohibited from taking another wife, then no, because it is Allaah ????? who has permitted him to take other wives as in His saying:

??????????? ??? ????? ????? ????? ?????????? ??????? ????????? ????????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ??????????? ??????????? ???? ??? ???????? ?????????????

{…then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one or (slaves) that your right hands possess…} [an-Nisaa’ 4:3]

14. Question: What is the ruling on using the material of those authors who quote from the Bible to establish hujjah (evidence)?

Answer: It is not permissible for a Muslim to read the books of the People of Book; like their books (the Old and New Testament) which report about the Torah or the Injeel because it is feared that he may be harmed or mislead by doing so, if his intention is merely to read and find out what is within them. However, if a student studies the book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ???? and he is firm upon that, and he wants to read the books of the People of the Book then it is permitted for him to do. The Salaf did this – they read the books of the People of the Book in order to refute them.

15. Question: When I read English books on Qur'aan and Sunnah, I come across different translations. What is the correct interpretation that should be used?

Answer: You should take the meaning of Tawheed from the clear Arabic language because the translator may have not translated Tawheed properly. So go back to the books, such as the explanation of the Qur’aan by Ibn Jareer or Ibn Katheer or Qurtubi or Abdur Rahmaan ibn as-Sa’dee ????? ???? or even Fathul-Qadeer by Imaam ash-Shawkaani ???? ????. It is also upon you return to the books of the Sunnah such as Fathul-Baari – the explanation of Saheeh al-Bukhaaree by Imaam Ibn Hajar, and the explanation by an-Nawawi of Saheeh Muslim as well as any other authentic or proper explanation of the Sunnah.

16. Question: Please suggest a legislated ruqyah (incantation) for a child who is five years old and who cannot speak or communicate.

Answer: Read on him the Faatihah and whatever else is easy from the Qur’aan like Ayatul-Kursi; and read the end of suratul-Baqarah from:

???????? ?? ??? ???????????? ????? ??? ????????

{To Allâh belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth …} [al-Baqarah 2:284]

until the end of the surah. Also read suratul-Ikhlaas and the Mu'awwidhatayn on him i.e. suratul-Falaq and suratun-Naas; and read suratul-Hashr and whatever is easy from the Qur’aan because all of the Qur’aan is a cure as Allaah ????? said:

??????????? ???? ?????????? ??? ???? ?????? ?????????? ????????????????

{And We send down of the Qur'ân that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islâmic Monotheism and act on it)…} [al-Israa’ 17:82]

17. Question: What is the understanding of the hadeeth ‘Al hamoowal- mawt’[8], does it include the father-in-law?

Answer: The meaning of the hadeeth, and Allaah knows best, is that the hamoo is the close relative of the husband and he is dangerous because it is not feared that he mixes with the wife – people do not fear this issue. As for the father of the husband and the son of the husband, it is permissible for a women to be alone with them because they are mahram to her. The hadeeth refers to those who are not mahaarim i.e. those who are not her mahram. So it is permissible for her to travel with her husband’s father or her husband’s son if she does not fear fitnah for herself. However, if she fears fitnah for herself then it is not permissible for her to travel even with her father or her brother, or to be alone with them as long as she fears fitnah for herself.

18. Question: A sister’s ex-husband does not pray and never prayed in their entire married life. She has two daughters with him and he forbids them to pray and instead teaches them bad manners like celebrating the birthdays. She is now re-married and would like to make hijrah but is not yet able to do so. What is best for her and her husband to do? Should she fight for her daughters until she has custody?

Answer: If this woman and her husband are able to practice their religion and show (manifest) the religion then maybe in their staying she will be able to free her two daughters from this bad man, in this case staying would be better for them. However, if the opposite is feared i.e. she fears fitnah for herself and her husband in staying, then it is better for them to make hijrah and Allaah ????? will take care of her two daughters Inshaa Allaahu ?????.

19. Question: Is it waajib to go to the masjid for salaatul-Fajr when it is snowing or could you pray at home?

Answer: If a person finds hardship in going out to the salaah in congregation, then he is permitted to pray at home. However, if that hardship is not great or he is able to handle that hardship, then it is better for him to go and pray with the congregation. As came in the hadith of the Messenger of Allaah ??? ???? ???? ????, “One prayer in congregation is better than a person praying at home by 27 levels"[9] and in another narration “it is better by 25 levels than praying at home.”[10] So gaining these levels (of reward) is better for a person than praying at home if he is able to handle the hardship. However, if he is not, then Inshaa Allaah ????? he is excused from praying in the Jamaa’ah; and depending on his keenness about praying with the Jamaa’ah, Inshaa Allaah, Allaah ????? will reward him for the salaah in Jamaa’ah and Allaah knows best.
